P Tuckwell hosts Apprentice Day

This month, we hosted our Technician apprentice training day, inviting all of our 22 Agriculture, Turf and Parts apprentices based across theeEight depots to attend a full day training session in Ardleigh.

Our Apprentices make up approximately 15 percent of our company structure. As a key part of our business, we’ve been invested in the John Deere apprenticeship scheme for over 25 years. In addition to giving our young apprentices the necessary foundations, it also ensures that we’re passing along best practice techniques and leading the way when it comes to technology advances.

The interactive session was presented by Managing Director, James Tuckwell; Service Manager, Phil Hannah; Warranty Manager, Paul Buckle and Sales Managers, Tom Mason and Mark Debenham

While giving the apprentices the opportunity to meet and share experiences, the session also covered all aspects of company, sales and warranty processes, looked at the life cycle of a job and discussed the importance of quality control.

We have always deeply understood the value of providing training and development for our staff. Investing in the future is an essential part of our strategy through building a team that connects with the agricultural and turf communities and has the customer at the heart of everything we do.

As we continue to grow, we’re hoping to further develop our apprenticeship schemes to extend our reach to offer more development opportunities to young people across Suffolk, Essex, Herts and Bedfordshire.

If you are interested in knowing more, or looking to becoming one of our Service or Parts apprentices, please feel free to contact your local branch for more details.

P Tuckwell ltd managing director, James Tuckwell has conquered one of the most gruelling mountain stages of the Tour de France cycling race, in aid of a charity supporting young people with disabilities.

James and his partner Hannah White, overcame the 92-mile uphill climb from Pau to Hautacam in the French Pyrenean mountain range on their bikes earlier this month to raise money for charity Action For Kids.

L’Etape du Tour, the 18th stage of the Tour de France, is open to amateur cyclists keen to emulate the professionals by reaching the Tourmalet, the highest road in the central Pyrenees.

Riders in this year’s Tour de France followed in James’s tracks the following Thursday when they reached the 18th stage of the race before crossing the race finish line of the race on the Sunday.

James expained to us:

“The L’Etape du Tour is renowned for being one of the toughest amateur cycling sportives, but it totally surpassed my expectations. It was a true test of mental determination as well as being hugely physically demanding.

“The conditions were as bad as they get. Temperatures were near to freezing and the rain was relentless. There were many times I thought we would have to abandon, like many others.

“I’m so glad we finished and were able to raise some money for such a worthy cause. Knowing that the young people Action For Kids supports were following us and willing us on, kept us going!

Action For Kids chief executive Graham Duncan said: “The grit, guts and determination taken to complete this challenge leaves me speechless. The fact that James undertook this on behalf of our young people makes it all the more amazing.

“I hope this demonstration of commitment to what we do for young disabled people and the money raised will help us make even more positive changes in their lives.”

James would like to thank John Deere, JCB, Vaderstad, Kverneland and Greggoire Besson who all sponsored him raising over £1,400 for this great charity.

If you wish to donate to James and Hannah’s fundraising efforts, visit justgiving.com/hannahWhite2014, or text “VELO96” to 70070 followed by the amount you want to donate.

Huge attendance at Ardleigh open night

Awards presented at dealer open evening

A late February open evening arranged by P Tuckwell Ltd to mark the retirement of sales manager Tom Glover also included an opportunity to check out some of the latest JCB and John Deere products and was very well attended. David Williams reports.

More than 350 farmers and contractors were at the open evening which was held at P Tuckwell’s Ardleigh, Essex depot. Most were from Essex and south Suffolk and there was a mix of both long-established and more recent customers of the dealer. “We were delighted with the attendance,” said P Tuckwell director James Tuckwell. “There is a great deal of respect and gratitude for everything Tom has done for the farming community and the open evening was an excellent opportunity for those he has worked with over the years to express their appreciation and to wish him all the best for his retirement.”
The open evening started at 7pm and guests enjoyed a hog roast and a bar, the opportunity for those in the industry to get together socially enjoyed by everyone present. “It was a great evening,” said James adding that the last guests departed well after midnight.
John Deere UK managing director Richard Johnson gave an address in which he acknowledged Tom’s dedication and loyalty to the John Deere brand and its customers, and P Tuckwell managing director Paul Tuckwell also paid tribute to the retiring sales manager’s contribution over the years.
Another member of staff receiving an award was group service director Colin Coombes who celebrated 50 years’ employment with P Tuckwell last year.

New products on show from John Deere included the latest additions to the 7R series as well as a 6RC series tractor with a front loader, both supplied for the evening by John Deere. New models from JCB on display were 560-80 and 531-70 Loadalls and a 434 wheeled loader. “Visitors made the most of the evening to find out about the latest products and to discuss their requirements for the coming year,” explained James. “Our sales specialists Paul Coffey and Martin Seabrook were kept busy all evening and received many enquiries and the lawn and garden products were in demand too.”
James said the evening was a total success; “It was most enjoyable for everyone who attended and Tom was very pleased with the response. He has been handing over his customers to other members of our sales team over the past few years in preparation for his retirement but his calm nature and ambassadorial qualities will be missed, both by colleagues and his many loyal customers.”

J.E BUCKLE team fully integrates into the P Tuckwell business for 2013

Following the acquisition of J.E Buckle Ltd by P Tuckwell Ltd in June 2012, and as the result of a six month period of integration and planning, J.E Buckle depots at Cromer, Hertfordshire and Maulden, Bedfordshire have now fully changed trading name to P Tuckwell Ltd as of December 2012.

Looking back to the early planning of the business transition former J.E Buckle Managing Director, Gary Buckle said;

“delivering sales and service solutions to our customers has always been a top priority for us and we fully understood that as a lone and relatively small scale operation J.E Buckle was exposed to the future challenges of farm and turf machinery distribution. Our customers will require enhanced services and solutions from us in the future and we knew we had to be part of something bigger to provide these”

The J.E Buckle business joined the Tuckwell Group on 1st June 2012 and remained trading as J.E Buckle for six months of integration. All staff have remained with the new business at the existing outlets; as well as the Buckle family who now additionally carry out duties as directors of P Tuckwell Ltd.

“We have been pleased how similar the friendly and flexible cultures of our businesses are, so naturally they have integrated well” commented James Tuckwell, Joint Managing Director P Tuckwell Ltd, “we have been comparing good practices, working on new systems and investing in extra resources where required, we have some exciting changes to come”

During a recent open day at the new P Tuckwell depot at Cromer, Herts, both
P Tuckwell Ltd Sales Director, Gary Buckle and James Tuckwell had the opportunity to meet with many customers and staff as well as check out the new dealership branding, together concluding:

“along with ourselves, all our team have seen the long-term benefits of being part of a larger dealership group by having access to increased levels of stock, demonstration machines, expertise and resources. We are confident that together we have established a stronger business for the future”

The combined business, now one of the largest and longest established John Deere dealers in the UK, currently employs over 140 staff across seven sites from Suffolk to Bedfordshire, representing the full line of John Deere Agricultural, Homeowner and Professional Turf products.

John Deere Unveils New Generation Baler

John Deere unveils new generation baler

John Deere’s all-new 900 Series variable chamber round balers feature a revolutionary Fast Release System (FRS), which can lead to savings of up to an hour a day during harvest. These unique balers will be available in limited quantities this year, before full commercial production begins for the 2012 season.

Designed specifically for use by contractors and large livestock farms, the new 960 and 990 balers employ state-of-the-art technology to significantly improve baler output, bale density and operator comfort. In addition, built-in reliability and durability are provided by the exclusive full-frame design, which relieves the entire bale chamber from external stress.

FRS speeds up the bale ejection process by enabling the operator to unload the completed bale in less than five seconds, which is up to 10 seconds faster than a conventional machine. It employs a unique ‘curtain’ design, which replaces the traditional heavy rear door.

As a further aid to increased productivity and efficiency, innovative side panels have replaced the usual bale chamber side walls. During bale formation, these flexible panels ensure that the baler reaches maximum capacity, and also open slightly as the bale is ejected, to prevent any risk of the bale jamming in the chamber.

The 960 and 990 balers are available with a choice of 2.2m wide RotoFlow or MaxiCut 13 or 25-knife precutter pick-ups, and produce bale diameters from 80 to 160cm and 80 to 185cm respectively. For improved crop flow and enhanced reliability, the newly designed high capacity pick-up uses five rows of tines instead of the four on traditional models. The balers are also equipped with a new drop-floor unplugging system, which operates over the total width of the rotor.

Maximum bale density is provided by the new MaxD bale chamber design, which means fewer bales per hectare need to be wrapped, handled and transported. This design features an offset density arm that transmits optimal tension to two wide endless belts, each 573mm wide. Three powered rollers inside the chamber also make starting the bale easier, especially in wet conditions.

The net wrapping system is now located at the front of the baler to allow continuous visual control of the wrapping process. The net is pulled directly into the bale chamber and plugging is therefore avoided, whatever type of net (CoverEdge or Edge to Edge) or net length is being used.

To further improve efficiency, especially during long working days, the new 900 Series balers are ISOBUS certified and can be equipped with a GreenStar 1800 display. This controls most of the key machine settings and functions, including bale density and size, soft core pressure and diameter, knife selection and operation of the drop-floor unplugging system.

The SIMA 2011 Gold Medal award winning Tractor Implement Automation (TIA) system will also be available as an option on the 900 Series balers, from 2012. When operated with a tractor featuring ISOBUS, a continuously variable transmission and electronic SCVs, this baler automation system also significantly reduces the harvest workload – instead of the driver having to stop the tractor to open and close the rear of the baler, TIA manages everything using simple fingertip controls to complete the baling process.

New 5430i Sprayer with 36 Meter Boom

John Deere’s flagship sprayer improved for 2011

A new John Deere 5430i self-propelled sprayer with 36m boom will be seen for the first time in the UK on the company’s stand (G30, Avenue B) at the LAMMA ’11 show in January.

Over 100 5430i sprayers are now at work in the UK and Ireland, providing high levels of spraying performance and productivity. The company’s European sprayer factory at Horst in The Netherlands has now started production of an enhanced machine for 2011, featuring new developments in spray boom suspension and application rate control.

A unique control system known as Boom Charge automatically increases pressure in the spraying system to optimise the application rate as the sprayer is switched on and accelerates away from the headland. This system minimises any under application that may occur, thus increasing overall spray accuracy, especially in areas where forward speed is changing rapidly, and providing much more even spray coverage.

Further design changes include an all-new boom centre frame and suspension, incorporating revised geometry for the folding cylinders, hinge points and anti-yaw system. This new arrangement increases the preloading on the anti-yaw dampers, while simultaneously reducing boom yaw travel.

In addition, new software for the BoomTrac automatic boom levelling and height control system has been introduced to take advantage of this new suspension geometry. Together, these developments have provided a further increase in boom ride performance, allowing the minimum height above the target to be consistently maintained even with wider booms and at speeds of up to 20kph.

Further details of the John Deere sprayer range are available from local dealers or by visiting the company’s website at www.JohnDeere.co.uk

ISOBUS communications system for automating harvesting operations
John Deere
Winner of an award at SIMA 2011

The first applications that use the ISOBUS communications protocol are a major technological leap for controlling machines and carrying out operations, particularly in harvesting:

The “ISOBUS Baler Automation” is a system that enables data to be exchanged in both directions between tractors and round baler presses. The baler press can automatically trigger various repetitive actions at the desired time, such as immobilising the tractor, binding the bale and then ejecting it. Used in conjunction with the "Fast Release System" which features on the brand-new John Deere 960 and 990 presses, it significantly reduces the amount of time it takes to eject the bales and increases their density. The two systems work together in complete synergy, increasing productivity, reducing energy/fuel consumption and improving operational comfort for the user.
Two types of tractor-tool guidance systems have been developed by John Deere in association with Grimme and Pöttinger. Grimme’s tractors are guided by Pöttinger’s tools using information exchanged over an ISOBUS connection:

Grimme’s “Root Runner” has been designed for use with its beetroot harvesters and potato diggers. The tractor is steered using information transmitted by sensors which mechanically detect rows and ridges.
The “Swath Scout” has been developed by Pöttinger for its self-loading trailers and uses a swath scanner which sends information to the tractor so that it can be steered automatically.
